Earth Day and Recycle aka: Lorax

So in honor of the Lorax movie coming out {way excited!!!!!!!}

We talked all about the 3 R's, composting and preserving the environment.
We sang these songs:

 With the K-1 children we broke it down in two days. We began with:
We did directed drawing for those items.  I drew the jar (well we called it a vase-I thought that it would look too much like our can lol)   on day two we did reduce and compost!  The older kids just broke their page in quarters.

I took this photo from on line, click on the source above to see my search.  I can't very well take a photo while we are using the app!  lol  :}  Anyways, now on to what we did.  We went around the room- we did this 4 times!  Each time they would say:

I would {recycle/reduce/reuse/compost} ____________________________. For their friends.  They laughed and laughed at me when I introduced it to them!

Space Day 4

Today we climbed onto our spaceships and journeyed to outer space.  Last year we did a planet or two a day, but this year, we just did a quick little trip to the entire solar system.

Some of them were disappointed to learn that they now consider Pluto a dwarf planet and were mad- so I let them add it anyways!

One of the 5th graders came up with this saying to remember the planets:
My
Very
Evil
Mother
Just
Served
Us
Nothing

I don't think that is the way I learned it though, I think the evil was educated {lol}

With the K-1 we just put them in order.  Yes I know these aren't in order, I had to quick take the photo because I forgot lol  I used those little mini pocket charts from Target.

First I showed these cards and then I displayed the larger ones on my easel.  I had them draw their favorite planet in  their logs.

If you look in the upper right hand corner, that is the sheet that I had the 2nd- 3rd graders fill out.

With the 4th and 5th graders, I had them draw and label their own.

(so as you may have noticed all of these charts- the other Mrs. R makes them-
if I didn't know any better, I'd think her middle name is Charts!!!
She has charts for anything and everything!
For example, she has charted several Dr. Seuss books.
In the past she has gone all out.
We create a Seussville in her room.
I hang what seems to be 1,000
Cat in the Hats from her ceiling.}

Perhaps, she should be my shout-out Saturday :)

From Farm to Table

This week we began our farm unit.

I made this barn- not so bad lol I left the middle white for writing.  We talked about who/what was on a farm and what it gave.

We did go over that pig meat has a name, and it isn't pig meat lol  I had the children make their own T-charts in their science logs.

After we brainstormed the "who's" we talked about what they gave.

I used Deanna's unit with the class book inside. I read the top and had the students repeat. Then I read the bottom and they repeated that.

Then for the Kindergartners got a chance to be the teacher.  They came to the barn and pointed to an animal and asked "their" class what they gave.  It was adorable!

Tree

We started discussing trees this week
I photo copied a diagram for all the K-2 children.
They had to label the parts.
3rd-5th graders had to draw and label.
We also listed trees that were indigenous to where we live.

We also sang this song to head shoulders knees and toes.  This is where I would love to be able to video my students to share what we did for our song.  Here will be my awful directions lol

Tree Song (Sung to Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes)
Leaves, branches, trunk and roots
Leaves, branches, trunk and roots
Trees are important to you and to me
Leaves, branches, trunk and roots

Leaves- reach up high- arms extended hands waving
branches- straight out like the Y in YMCA song
trunk- legs together arms tight to side (think cheerleader)
roots- spread legs apart

Now my brain is searching for a child I can use to show this- parents be aware that I may ask you for your help!!
