Inventors and Inventions

Here are some of the books we used for our unit.

I wrote names on sentence strips along with what they invented.
I had 2-5 children record in their science log.
I had the K-1 children draw their favorite invention. I wrote who the inventor was if they couldn't.
We talked about how the inventions changed our lives.

I wrote a small easy reader where the children draw what each inventor invented.

Click here for the graphics I used.

I shrunk it down to fit in our science logs.

Weather

Part of the science curriculum is to talk about weather.
Our science kits come with these awesome stamps.
To introduce this, I recreated this on the board.
It was identical to this sheet- I was hoping
that there would be no mistakes, but alas... we are first graders!
I put the stamp sets at each table.
All the cloudy ones at one
precipitation at another
and wind at the last.

Even if you don't have the stamps, you could just have them draw their own or you could find weather graphics and the students could glue them in the correct spots. I would still operate the same way, with the children moving from table to table to glue the correct icons in the correct spots.

Math

Each day, we have a math graph.
Here we collected out data:
My awful snake but okay mouse!
In the lower left hand- yeah, ummmm that is supposed to be a skunk!

To save on paper, we do group work together on the Elmo.
It is a time filler.

Living and Non- Living

Check out her plans HERE so you too can get your very own copy

We re-created this chart in our Science Logs.

I made a big one on my easel.

I went around and asked the students each individual question- did you notice that one of my froglets said "kids" don't need food??? Wow!  was their an uproar!!!

We read this book and then I called children up and they pointed to something and asked the other froglets if it was alive or not.

I try to make boring items, a little less boring.  So Instead of just making two lists, I had them outline something alive and something not.

After the K-1 and I read the book, we sorted these in the pocket chart.

Make it Monday

So I got these "sleeves" for free...

But now I don't know really what to do with them...

I want students to be able to use them, so their intended use of putting them in a binder doesn't work for me.

What are some ideas for using them?

Happy Halloween

For Halloween I plan to incorporate
some ideas from:
Perhaps read this and create the class book:
I will be projecting this on my SmartBoard
I hope we have enough time to do this too on the Smartboard:
Maybe play a game with these:
